Each student, in grades 2 through 8, is required to earn Accelerated Reader points. The points earned each trimester count as a test grade in reading or literature. The student choses a book from the Accelerated Reader lists which are kept updated on the Saint John School webpage and can be found on each grade's homeroom page. A student may select a book 1.5 grade levels below his/her current grade or 2 grade levels above. Exceptions may be allowed on a per student basis with teacher consultation. Each class is assigned a minimum number of points to be earned each trimester. This number increases according to grade level. After reading the book, the student may come to the library to take the computerized ACR test. Tests may be taken during regular library periods, morning homeroom, or snack time. Tests may not be taken if there is a class in the library. Each book has a point value. A minimum of 60% is required to achieve any points. The student logs on to the library computer with his/her user name and password. The student must enter his/her name, date, book title, and points earned in the log kept in the library. If a student chooses the wrong test, s/he must make the librarian aware of the mistake immediately so that it can be deleted. S/he must not continue to take the test. Once a test is taken it cannot be re-taken whether or not it was passed or failed. After the test is taken, the computer calculates the total number of points earned for that test as well as the total number of points earned for that trimester. Points earned in one trimester do not carry over to the next trimester, but do accumulate for the year's total points. |
